Monika Maeckle is a pollinator advocate, caterpillar wrangler, Master Gardener, Monarch tagger, and curious student of nature who loves the whole life cycle. With a long career in media and marketing, she writes for the Texas Butterfly Ranch website, the Rivard Report, and is working on a book. Maeckle raises butterflies for fun in her Mariposario and downtown San Antonio garden as well as at her family's Llano River ranch. She, her family and friends have tagged more than 4,500 Monarch butterflies, 35 of which have been recovered from the forest floor in the mountains of Mexico.

Maeckle worked with the National Wildlife Federation to convince the San Antonio leaders to sign the NWF’s Mayor’s Monarch Pledge in 2015, resulting in San Antonio’s status as the nation’s first Monarch Butterfly Champion City. In 2016, with the help of many volunteers and a handful of amazing sponsors, she organized San Antonio's Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival at the Pearl.

The Festival will celebrate its fourth year October 18 -20, 2019, during peak monarch migration season in San Antonio. Maeckle also recently spearheaded a citywide pollinator habitat initiative, 300for300, an effort to create 300 pollinator habitats for San Antonio’s 300th birthday.
